First North-listed Crunchfish has received a prior notice from the Patent and Registration Office (PRV) that two patents for sporadic and synchronized beacon transmission will be granted. The technology enables reawakening of mobiles, for example, to regularly identify where mobile users are located.

Beacon technology was originally developed for stationary transmitters that continuously broadcast a bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby mobiles. When a mobile responds to a beacon signal, an application in the mobile measures the bluetooth signaling. Since this application affects power usage, mobile operating systems restrict how often the program is running. For example, in Apple’s mobile operating system iOS, this means that a mobile device must have been outside of the beacon signal coverage area for a period and then re-enter in order to be detected again.

In order to enable the reawakening of mobiles, even though they remain within the beacon signal’s range, these inventions suggest sporadic and synchronized beacon transmission, where the beacon signal is regularly turned off long enough for the mobiles to respond again when the beacon transmission is switched back on. The patent applications, relating to Sweden, have numbers 1551516-6 and 1651312-9. Patent protection is valid until 2035. An International PCT application has also been submitted.

The patents enable for example:

  • Locating staff at offices
  • Locating visitors and visitor flows at trade fairs
  • Analyzing customer flows in department stores
  • Locating mobile equipment in large premises

“The patented technology is useful for locating people and objects in larger buildings. The patent strengthens our patent portfolio and also protects some further uses of our technology, “says Joachim Samuelsson, Chairman and Chief IP Officer.

Crunchfish’s patent portfolio
Crunchfish has, nationally and internationally, 51 active patents and patent applications in two technology areas – gesture control and augmented reality. There are eleven unique inventions in the field of gesture control, of which ten have been granted patents and 13 unique inventions in augmented reality, of which seven have been approved patents. The company owns all its patents and patent applications without limitation.

Crunchfish’s strategy is to protect the company’s technology in all geographically important markets. Crunchfish intends to expand its patent portfolio continuously to selected markets and through new inventions in both gesture control and augmented reality.
