New company group structure in Crunchfish

Crunchfish AB (“Crunchfish”) today announces that the company has started a restructuring of the company group structure, with the purpose to clarify the different business areas and put these in relevant subsidiaries. With the new company group structure, Crunchfish’s different business areas will be operated in separate wholly owned subsidiaries, each of which can report its own revenues and expenses. The new company group structure will not have any direct financial impact on Crunchfish, but only aims to create a further increase in clarity and transparency.

Crunchfish Proximity AB is undergoing a name change to Crunchfish Digital Cash AB with Patrik Lindeberg as CEO. The closely related solution areas Digital Cash, Blippit and Nearby are part of this company. Crunchfish starts a new subsidiary, Crunchfish Food Waste AB with a focus on Food Waste in which Linda Kronby will be the new CEO. Linda will also continue as CEO of Blippit AB, which Crunchfish Digital Cash AB owns together with ClearOn AB in equal parts. The third subsidiary is Crunchfish Gesture Interaction AB, where Joakim Nydemark is still CEO.

Linda Kronby appointed as new CEO of Blippit AB

Crunchfish AB (”Crunchfish”) today announces that Linda Kronby is appointed as new CEO of Blippit AB (“Blippit”). Linda Kronby was originally hired by Crunchfish in March 2020 as Senior Business Developer. Linda has more than 15 years of experience of business development within the retail sector from both Nielsen and GS1 Sweden. Linda succeeds Joachim Samuelsson as CEO, who will now instead be able to dedicate all of his time to his role as group CEO of Crunchfish. Linda assumes her new role effective immediately and will divide her time between Blippit and Crunchfish, where she continues to be responsible for the commercialization within Food Waste. Crunchfish owns Blippit through its subsidiary Crunchfish Proximity AB, in equal parts with ClearOn AB.

Linda is already responsible for the commercial launch in Blippit AB together with Patrik Lindeberg, who was recently appointed as CEO of Crunchfish Proximity AB. Digital Cash – Why are we dependent on the net when we pay?

Crunchfish’s most recent solution area is Digital Cash, where the company enables cash in digital form. The flexibility to pay digitally, combined with the effects of the pandemic, mean that the use of cash is declining rapidly, but this has also made us vulnerable since we have become dependent on the connections and payment services that work there and then. This is an unnecessary risk to take, and a typical example of how technology sets up unnecessary obstacles, explains Joachim Samuelsson, CEO of Crunchfish.

  • The time-critical payment moment should be implemented as a separate step, completely separate from the subsequent transfer between accounts. This simple and ingenious change means that we magically eliminate all the online factors that can fail when we make payments. Crunchfish’s Digital Cash really always works, is easy to use and, last but not least, it lets you stay anonymous. The bank doesn’t need to know what you do simply because you pay digitally.

    Blippit – Why can’t we blip in many more situations?

Blippit delivers smooth payment solutions. Blipping is convenient, and Crunchfish makes it as easy to pay with Swish as to blip a card. The Blippit app terminal is the bridge between the customer’s mobile and the in-store POS. The technology also enables blipping in other situations, for example when finding offers, checking in, unlocking or logging in using a mobile phone.

  • Blippit’s big breakthrough is its Digital Cash, because the app terminal transfers offline payments directly to the cash register.

    Food waste – Why do we throw away a third of all produced food?

One third of all food produced is thrown away. This is huge financial costs and has a big negative impact on the climate and the environment. Thanks to an automated way for sellers to give consumers a discount at the checkout if they don’t casually choose the freshest product. It’s all based on the fact that in the near future, the striped EAN code on goods will be swapped for a checkered QR code. This code can also contain information about each individual product, such as its best-before date. Tempting discounts on older goods will affect our buying behavior and reduce food waste. Simple and ingenious.

Nearby – Why is it hard to communicate with the proximity?
14 patent-pending inventions from 2014, of which 12 have been granted.

Proximity is the next area for the mobile to conquer. It can also be digitized, to let people understand much more about their surroundings than is possible using only our senses. The mobile phone can let you discover and communicate with everything and everyone nearby. With approval, it makes it possible to discover and communicate with everyone around our own digital bubbles. Seamless superpowers.

Gestures – Why do we walk around looking down at our mobiles all the time?

Gesture control lets you control your electronics using only your hands. For example, skip the selfie stick and take photos from a distance with Crunchfish’s popular free GoCam app, available on the app store. The big breakthrough for gesture control, however, is the smart AR glasses. They free our hands, finally letting us lift our gaze from the phone screen.

Seamless Swish payments via Blippit app terminal now available for Extenda Retail’s customers

Extenda Retail today announces the release of a seamless Swish payment solution for its point of sale (POS) and self checkout (SCO) products. The solution is developed in collaboration with Crunchfish and is based on Blippit, the world’s first app terminal. Add-ons with support for Blippit and Swish are available as an easy upgrade for immediate delivery.

Extenda Retail is the Nordic region’s leading POS software supplier with installations at the largest chains in the retail and FMCG sectors. With Blippit, Extenda Retail’s POS now offers a seamless Swish payment solution, both in the traditional manned POS checkouts as well as in the self-checkout kiosks. Blippit enables a smoother checkout flow, allowing customers to check out and pay with a single “blip”, using their own smartphone. To enable Blippit support, the merchant only needs a small software update with the Blippit add-on, and then just to connect the plug-and-play Blippit app terminal to a free USB-port.

Crunchfish’s patent application for robust blip using Blippit’s app terminal has been approved

Crunchfish has received advanced notice of patent approval from the Swedish Patent and Registration Office for its innovation that determines whether a mobile phone is in absolute proximity of a base unit, such as an app terminal. The patent protects the invention of combining the measurement of a radio signal’s strength with some other form of proximity sensor to confirm absolute proximity. The patent is of strategic significance for Crunchfish and Blippit as it allows for a robust blip, regardless of the model of the payer’s mobile phone; this level of robustness is difficult to obtain without the complimentary proximity sensor.

The patent protects the innovation of complementing the measurement of the radio signal strength with an additional proximity sensor to determine whether a mobile user is in the vicinity of a base unit. This complementary sensor can be based on any medium, including light, capacitive, inductive, infrared, ultrasound, etc or even a mechanical button. This provides broad protection and makes it difficult for competitors to achieve such a robust blip.

When solely measuring signal strength, some mobile phone models could get an unwanted blip from up to a half a meter away, which creates a sense of instability. Alternative technology for a blip is Near Field Communication (NFC), which both cards and mobile phones can use to blip on a card terminal. The disadvantage with NFC is that many mobile phones still do not support the technology and it only supports interactions at a few centimeters distance. Bluetooth, which Blippit uses, is available in essentially all mobile phones, and it also enable merchants to trigger messages or discount offers to customers within certain distances from the app terminal.

The patent with Swedish application number 1950334-1 has priority until March 2039. An international PCT-application has been submitted, which means that the decision on which countries we wish to nationalise patents in can wait until 30 months after the filing date of March 19, 2019.

Crunchfish’s patent portfolio

Crunchfish’s strategy is to protect the company’s technology in all geographic markets deemed to be of significance. Crunchfish intends to continuously expand its patent portfolio to select markets and through inventions in both gesture control and proximity-based interaction.

This is the company’s 14th patent within proximity-based interaction, which means that Crunchfish now has obtained patents for 14 of 20 unique inventions in this area. In addition, Crunchfish also has patents for 11 of 12 inventions in the company’s other technology area, that of gesture control. The company owns all its patents and patent applications without restrictions.

Blippit integrerad med EG Retails betallösning släpps till marknaden

EG Retail har integrerat Blippit i sin betallösning Payment platform och har nu tagit beslut om att släppa den till marknaden i sin kommande produktrelease 31 januari 2020. Blippit blir initialt tillgänglig för kunder som använder lösningen Fackta POS och kommer senare under året införas i koncernens gemensamma plattform för alla kunder.

Blippit integreras i Ticksters kassasystem

Blippit, delägt dotterbolag till Crunchfish Proximity, har ingått avtal med Tickster om integration och pilottester av Blippits appterminal med Ticksters kassasystem Blink och BoxPoint. Kassasystemen kommer bli första ut på marknaden med möjligheten att Swisha med Blippit.

Ticksters erbjuder kassasystem för att användas på evenemang av arrangörer inom musik, kultur och sport. Bland kunderna finns bl.a. Liseberg, Sweden Rock, Färjestad BK, HV71, Uppsala Konsert & Kongress och Vasaloppet. Tickster möjliggör en effektiv försäljningsprocess, betalning och administration både online, inför ett evenemang och på plats när evenemanget äger rum.

Blippit har integrerats med Ticksters kassasystem Blink och BoxPoint. Detta innebär att appterminalen fungerar ihop med Ticksters båda kassasystem på liknande sätt som en kortterminal och att appterminalen blir bryggan som möjliggör Swish-betalning med ett blipp. Blippit och Tickster diskuterar nu lämpliga kunder för pilottester.

Vi är mycket glada att komma ut i marknaden tillsammans med Tickster och att integrationen både gick både snabbt och smidigt. Tickster har flera intressanta kunder, däribland Liseberg och ett antal SHL-klubbar, genom vilka vi skulle kunna göra pilottester av appterminalen. Blippit is now a registered trademark in India

Blippit’s trademark registration has been approved in India, which is the market outside Sweden that Crunchfish is actively approaching. Previously, we have received Blippit’s approval as a brand in the EU, UK, China, South Korea, Turkey, Mexico, Singapore and New Zealand.

One of the things to secure when building a global business is trademarks. Crunchfish has always been active in filing patents to secure the future for our products but we also see the value of securing our brands with trademark registration. Approved regions for the Blippit trademark are India, the EU, UK, China, South Korea, Turkey, Mexico, Singapore and New Zealand. We are also awaiting review notice from Norway, Switzerland, Israel, Japan, Indonesia, Australia.


Blippit’s app terminal is displayed at exhibition in Paris

Blippit’s app terminal, which has been developed by Crunchfish Proximity, is displayed at the European Utility Week exhibition in Paris on November 12th-14th. The app terminal will be showed in Nordic Semiconductor’s stand. They are one of the market leaders in wireless technology and also a hardware supplier to the app terminal. 

The app terminal is a new patented type of payment infrastructure that connects any app with the cash register system. The solution enables an alternative payment method to traditional card terminals and also changes payment services and coupon management in the FMCG market. Swish, with seven million users in Sweden, is the first app that will be integrated into the eco-system.

The app terminal utilises Nordic Semiconductor’s market leading Bluetooth technology, which enables contact between the mobile and the cash register via the app terminal. On November 12th-14th 2019, Nordic Semiconductor are displaying the app terminal together with the company’s current product portfolio at European Utility Week in Paris. European Utility Week is an annual exhibition where the main topics are new technology and sustainable development. Every year, over 800 companies exhibit at the fair, which is attended by over 18,000 professionals.
